Everyone starts somewhere. Your first Shitō-ryū class in TTDI is a free trial: no gi, no experience, no pressure. Come as you are, and Sensei Zad will place you at the right level.
Starting something new is the hardest part — and it is almost always the nerves that get in the way, not the karate. You might be wondering what to wear, whether you’ll look silly, or whether you’re too old, too young, too unfit or too late to begin.
You’re not. Every black belt in the dojo, Sensei Zad included, once stood exactly where you’re standing now: a complete beginner in a white belt, unsure what came next. Karate is built for people who have never done it before. The whole point is to teach you, step by step, from nothing.
So whether you’re a parent thinking about it for your child, or an adult finally getting round to it for yourself, this page is for the first-timer. Here’s exactly what a beginning looks like at our dojo in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.
Your first class is a free trial. Nothing about it is a test, and there’s nothing you need to prepare. Here’s how a session goes:
By the end of the class you’ll have a real feel for how the dojo trains and whether it’s for you. Sensei Zad will have a quick chat with you afterwards about where to go next.
We run two beginner-friendly sessions, split simply by age. You don’t need to work out which one is right — Sensei Zad places every new student himself.
Kids start in the Saturday Junior Karate class, 9:30 – 11:30 AM at Sinaran TTDI. It’s a structured session for younger students working through the early kyu grades, taught at a pace built for children.
Teenagers and adults start in the Thursday Combined Class, from 7:00 PM at Sinaran TTDI. All grades train together here, from brand-new white belts through to Dan grades. Beginners are given the basics to focus on, so you learn at your own level even in a mixed room.
Not sure where a particular student fits? That’s Sensei Zad’s job. Tell him the age and he’ll point you to the right class and time.
Two things that stop people starting: the cost of kit, and the fear of signing up for something big. Neither applies to your trial.
That’s the whole idea: take the risk out of starting, so the only question left is whether you enjoyed it.
Ready to give it a go? Message Sensei Zad on WhatsApp with the student’s age, and he’ll suggest a class and time that fits. Your first session is completely free.
| Day | Class | Grade | Time | Dojo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday | Junior Karate (kids) | 9 kyu – 6 kyu | 9:30 – 11:30 AM | Sinaran TTDI |

You'll be taught from the very first stance. Everyone in the room was a white belt once.
Wear loose clothing for your trial — no gi, no gear. Sort a uniform later, only if you join.
You won't be dropped in the deep end. Sensei Zad puts you in the class and grade that fits your age and level.
Try a real session before you commit anything. No pressure, no sales pitch.
None at all. Beginners are taught from the first stance, and every student in the dojo started as a white belt.
You join a real session, learn some basics and see how the dojo trains. Sensei Zad will chat with you afterwards about the right class going forward.
No — just loose, comfortable clothing. A karategi comes later, and only if you decide to join.
Message Sensei Zad on WhatsApp with the student's age and he'll suggest a class and time. Your first session is free.
A mix — but you'll be taught at your level. The Combined class has all grades training together, and beginners are given the basics to work on.
